In short: Call2Teams, a Dstny product, is a cloud Direct Routing service for Microsoft Teams. Call2Teams for PBX registers Teams users to your existing PBX as SIP extensions, keeping its hunt groups, IVR and call flows; Call2Teams for SIP Trunks brings your carrier and numbers into Teams. Nothing is installed on site, and each user needs Teams Phone Standard.
What Call2Teams is
Call2Teams is a Direct Routing as a Service platform that connects Microsoft Teams to telephony you already have. It is sold by Dstny, the cloud communications company, and its product pages now sit on dstny.com.
Instead of you buying and running a Session Border Controller, the Call2Teams service sits in the cloud between Microsoft Teams and your PBX or SIP trunks, and connections are set up through the Call2Teams portal. Users make and take calls in the standard Teams app on desktop and mobile, and on Teams-certified devices.
It is a form of Teams Direct Routing, so all the usual Direct Routing benefits apply: keep your carrier, keep your numbers, and mix it with other Teams PSTN options in the same tenant.
The Call2Teams services
| Service | What it connects | What stays the same |
|---|---|---|
| Call2Teams for PBX | Teams users to your existing cloud, on-premise or hybrid PBX, registering each user as a SIP extension | Your PBX's routing logic, hunt groups, IVR and call flows |
| Call2Teams for SIP Trunks | Your existing SIP trunk provider and numbers to Teams Phone | Your carrier, contract and numbers, with no porting; Teams Phone provides the PBX features |
Dstny also lists Call2Teams Operator Connect and Call2Teams Mobile, which are aimed at operators and carriers rather than end customers. For most organisations the choice is between the PBX and SIP trunk pathways above.
How Call2Teams for PBX works
With Call2Teams for PBX, the platform registers to your PBX as a standard SIP device, one registration per user extension, and maps each extension to a Teams user. Dstny describes it as working with any SIP-capable PBX or call control platform, whether on-premise, cloud-hosted or hybrid.
For the user, the extension simply rings in Teams, with transfer, hold, forwarding and voicemail. For the business, the PBX keeps doing what it already does:
- Call flows, hunt groups, menus and out-of-hours rules stay on the PBX
- No change to your PBX's routing, and no on-site installation for the SIP registration
- The connection to the PBX runs over the public internet, so no dedicated circuit is needed
- If you rely on PBX-based contact centre reporting, call recording or desk phones, we confirm how they behave with Teams users during a pilot
This makes it worth considering if you have invested in a PBX and its call handling, or if you run hosted 3CX and want some users in Teams. For 3CX specifically, compare it with the 3CX Microsoft Teams integration.
How Call2Teams for SIP Trunks works
Call2Teams for SIP Trunks connects your existing SIP trunk provider to Teams, so Teams Phone becomes your PBX while your carrier keeps supplying numbers and minutes. It suits organisations that like their current carrier contract, or have numbers that are hard to move, but want to retire an old PBX and use Teams Phone's auto attendants, call queues and voicemail.
The trunk connects to the Call2Teams platform by SIP registration or by fixed, resilient IP addresses set up in the Call2Teams portal. Dstny says there is no on-site visit, no number porting and no carrier contract to renegotiate, and numbers can be assigned to users, call queues and auto attendants from the portal. See SIP trunks for what to check with your carrier.
What you need
- A Microsoft 365 or Teams plan that includes Teams, for each user
- A Teams Phone Standard licence for each user. Dstny states that both pathways require one per user. A Microsoft Calling Plan is not needed
- For Call2Teams for PBX: a SIP-capable PBX and a SIP extension for each Teams user
- For Call2Teams for SIP Trunks: a SIP trunk from your carrier, with the numbers you want in Teams
- A Teams admin to consent to the connection and assign numbers and voice routing
There is no software or hardware to install on site. See Teams Phone licensing for the Microsoft side.
When Call2Teams fits, and how we help
Call2Teams tends to suit organisations that want Teams calling without throwing away a phone system or carrier that works. If you have no PBX to keep and want one UK supplier for numbers, calls and licences, Forever Teams or a Teams Calling Plan may be simpler.
We supply Call2Teams with the Microsoft licences it needs, and we can:
- Check your PBX or SIP trunk for compatibility and plan extension mapping.
- Set up the Call2Teams tenant, Teams Phone licences and voice routing.
- Pilot with a small group, then roll out by team.
- Support the service alongside your PBX or carrier.
